What is Curie temperature?

In this article, we will study about the Curie Temperature (also called Curie Point).

In simple words, Temperature at/above which Magnetic Materials loose their magnetic strength and properties. French Scientist Pierre Curie (1859-1960) showed that at a critical temperature, magnetic materials loose their magnetism.

Above the Curie Temperature, Ferromagnetic material , Ferrimagnetic material and Anti-ferromagnetic Material becomes Paramagnetic Materials

When magnetic material is heated, their molecules start vibrating. As the temperature is increased, individual molecules of the material gets out of alignment from magnetic field and thereby reducing magnetic strength.

Curie Temperature

Above Fig. shows the decrease of magnetic strength with rise in temperature. The Temperature at which the vibrations of the molecules becomes so random that it goes out of alignment and reduces magnetic strength to zero is called Curie Temperature.
