What is a Kilowatt-Hour?

A kilowatt-hour, otherwise known as a kWh, is a way to measure how much energy you’re using.

It’s not the number of kilowatts you’re using in an hour, even though that seems to make sense. A kWh equals the amount of energy you would use by keeping a 1,000 watt appliance running for one hour. In metric, 1,000 = kilo, so 1,000 watts equals a kilowatt.

For instance, if you turned on a 100 watt bulb, it would take 10 hours to use one kilowatt-hour of energy. A 2,000 watt appliance, on the other hand, would only take half an hour. It all comes down to dividing the number of watts in an appliance into 1,000.

A watt is a unit of power, named after engineer James Watt, which measures the rate of energy transfer. A watt, in electrical terms, is the rate at which electrical work is done when one ampere (A) of current flows through one volt (V)

How to Convert Kilowatt-Hours to Watts

A watt, expressed as W, is a measure of power while a kilowatt-hour is a measure of energy equivalent to 1,000 watt-hours, or 1,000 watts of power for 1 hour. So, to convert kilowatt-hours to watts, multiply the energy in kilowatt-hours by 1,000 to find the energy in watt-hours, then divide by the time in hours.

The power P in watts (W) is equal to 1000 times the energy E in kilowatt-hour (kWh), divided by the time period t in hours (hr)

P(W) = 1000 × E(kWh) / t(hr)

So

watt = kilowatt-hour / hour

or

W = 1000 × kWh / h

Example

What is the power consumption in watts when the energy consumption is 15 kilowatt-hour for time duration of 3 hours?

P = 1000 × 15 kWh / 3 h = 5000 W
