What is a volt?

A volt is a unit of electric potential, also known as electromotive force, and represents the potential difference between two points of a conducting wire carrying a constant current of 1 ampere, when the power dissipated between these points is equal to 1 watt. Stated another way, a potential of one volt appears across a resistance of one ohm when a current of one ampere flows through that resistance.

Example

What is the voltage in volts when the power consumption is 4 kilowatts and the current flow is 3 amps?

V = 4 kW / 3A = 1333.333V

V(V) = 1000 × P(kW) / (PF × I(A) )

Example

What is the RMS voltage in volts when the power consumption is 4 kilowatts, the power factor is 0.8 and the phase current is 3.75 amps?

V = 1000 × 4kW / (0.8 × 3.75A) = 1333.333V

The line to line RMS voltage VL-L in volts (V) is equal to 1000 times the power P in kilowatts (kW), divided by square root of 3 times the power factor PF times the current I in amps (A)

VL-L(V) = 1000 × P(kW) / (3 × PF × I(A) )

         ≈ 1000 × P(kW) / (1.732 × PF × I(A) )

Example

What is the RMS voltage in volts when the power consumption is 4 kilowatts, the power factor is 0.8 and the phase current flow is 2.165 amps?

V = 1000 × 4kW / (3 × 0.8 × 2.165A) = 1333V
